Registered Investments

RRSP

A Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) is a government-approved plan that helps people save money for their retirement. Any contributions made (within limits imposed by the Canada Revenue Agency) are tax deductible and the interest earned is tax sheltered. You can contribute a lump sum to your Belgian-Alliance Credit Union RRSP or you can set up an automatic transfer that can coincide with your pay schedule. Alternatively, deposits can be made through our Online Banking.

RRSPs can be purchased as a fixed term, ranging from 1 to 5 years or as a variable option, which allows subsequent deposits to be made to the plan.

All deposits guaranteed without limit by the Deposit Guarantee Corporation of Manitoba.

Locked-In Retirement Accounts (LIRA) are also available for certain jurisdictions. Contact your branch for details.

Home Buyers' Plan

The Home Buyers' Plan (HBP) is a program that allows up to $25,000 to be withdrawn from your RRSP to buy or build a qualifying home for yourself or for a related person with a disability.

For details on the Home Buyers' Plan please speak with one of our staff members.

Lifelong Learning Plan

The Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP) allows you to withdraw money from your RRSP to finance education or training for yourself, your spouse, or your common-law partner. It cannot be used for your children.

Speak with one of our staff members for details on the Lifelong Learning Plan.

RRIF

A Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF) is a government-approved means of providing a maturing option for RRSPs. Funds can be transferred from RRSPs, another RRIF or a Registered Pension Plan.

All RRSPs must be wound up by the end of the year in which the plan holder turns 71 years of age. One such option that can be utilized is a RRIF. A RRIF provides you with a regular stream of income. The government mandates a minimum amount that must be withdrawn annually from the plan, however any amount above the minimum requirement may be withdrawn. All monies withdrawn become taxable income in the year of withdrawal.

Belgian-Alliance Credit Union offers flexible withdrawals that can be made on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis. RRIF terms are available in fixed lengths ranging from 1 to 5 years or as a variable option.

All deposits guaranteed without limit by the Deposit Guarantee Corporation of Manitoba.

Life Income Funds (LIF) are also available for certain jurisdictions. Contact your branch for details.

TFSA

Tax Free Savings Accounts (TFSA) are government-approved savings accounts that allow you to earn tax-free investment income. Contributions are made with after tax dollars, so they are not deductible for tax purposes. As such, this also means that all interest earned as well as any withdrawals made are non-taxable. Any unused contribution room can be carried forward to the subsequent year and any withdrawals made creates additional contribution room in the year following the withdrawal.

Deposits can be made to your Belgian-Alliance Credit Union TFSA in a lump sum or you can set up an automatic transfer to coincide with your pay schedule. Alternatively, deposits can be made through our Online Banking. Fixed term lengths ranging from 1 to 5 years are available, as well as a variable option, which allows subsequent deposits to be made.

All deposits guaranteed without limit by the Deposit Guarantee Corporation of Manitoba.

RESP

A Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) is a government-approved plan that allows you to save for your beneficiary or beneficiaries' post-secondary education. Interest earned within the plan is tax-free until time of withdrawal. The lifetime contribution limit is $50,000 per beneficiary. As an added incentive, the government may provide various grants to the plan within prescribed limits. All contributions are non-tax deductible.

A professional manager selects the fund's holdings and will invest in bonds, equities, cash, derivatives or other securities, or a combination of, depending on the objectives of the fund. Mutual Fund values vary from day to day as a result of economic conditions and interest rates. As a result, the value of your Mutual Funds may go up and down, resulting in an increase or decrease in your investment.

Investors in a Mutual Fund share the income and expenses, gains and losses that the fund makes in its investments proportionally to the number of units owned. The value of the investment is only realized when the units held by the investor are redeemed.

Mutual Funds are offered through Credential Asset Management Inc. Commissions, trailing commissions, management fees and expenses all may be associated with mutual fund investments. Please read the prospectus before investing. Unless otherwise stated, mutual fund securities and cash balances are not covered by the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation or by any other government deposit insurer that insures deposits in credit unions. Mutual funds are not guaranteed, their values change frequently and past performance may not be repeated. ®Credential is a registered mark owned by Credential Financial Inc. and is used under licence.
